The new "THREAT"?
Which is this superbug found in bacteria that carry the New Delhi Metallo-lactamase-1(NDM-1) gene..Named New Delhi caused it's originated from India.
The 1st victim was infected by the bacteria while being treated in a hospital in Pakistan & died in June last year. Despite been administered a powerful Antibiotics; colistin the patient still died. This is a wake up call for all who takes this bacteria lightly because the spread is becoming wider via contact & travel. The epicentre of the presence of this bacteria seems to be in India & Pakistan. The controversial issue is that the Indian doctors say the warnings about this drug-resistant superbug were Alarmist.
However, I think we should not be complacent about the issues of New UNknown bacteria or viruses as we do not know the dangers they might cause to human kinds. Moreover, NDM-1 passes easily between types of bacteria and makes them resistant to almost all the powerful, last-line Antibiotics called Carbapenems. There are no Antibiotics in the pipeline to that have activity against NDM-1 producing enterobacteriaceae.
To all who never listens to Doctors' advice on finishing their Antibiotics will have over time contributed to the Antibiotic resistance! Not to worry, this bacteria targets mainly on immuno-compromised people, through food preparation, bodily contacts, and especially hospital procedures. And it is found mostly spread to those who seek medical care in plastic surgery from India/Pakistan. What all of us can do is to keep a high maintained personal hygiene, safe food & water supply, Not wasting important Antibiotics in food animals.
Microbial studies is actually interesting as well! So should i change my Majors to Microbial Biotech?!
